Significance of bindi or dot on the forehead

The bindi or a small circular dot carried by women on their forehead has no religious significance. It is more of  beauty spot than anything else. The positioning of the dot may signify the third eye. The power of awakening and enlightenment. The bindi has become more fashionable these days than any of the other values. Hindu men carry a similar mark called tilak on their forehead. It may represent the religious sect that they belong or it may signify the third eye of awakening. Usually Hindu men and women are seen carrying such a mark after a particular puja or celebration. But again there is no particular religious significance to the mark.
